The ecommerce titans battle on...
1. Walmart VS Amazon: The battle continues. While Amazon still retains dominance in the ecommerce market, Walmart has shown strong growth and is ever growing its online selling strength. Meanwhile, Amazon is pushing for increased brick and mortar presence to compete with Walmart's grocery empire - which, reportedly more than half of Americans most often go to when they need groceries, as opposed to Amazon's 15% share. 2. Amazon sees more ad growth than Facebook and Google with a 25% increase in Q3 over and increase of 2.5% from google and a decrease of 3.7% (year over year) from Facebook. While Google and Facebook are still much larger than Amazon, the ecommerce giant seems strong in pursuit. All of this is good news for Amazon, but sellers are feeling the pain as a result. While they do get more avenues to advertise, advertising costs continue to soar as well. [Learn more].
3. Former big tech exec takes warehouse job at Amazon. Philip Su, former executive of both Microsoft and Facebook turned to the hard physical labor and comparatively low wage of an Amazon warehouse employee as a means of curbing his burnout-driven depression. He suffered from carpel tunnel (which Amazon did nothing about more than letting him keep his job), and noted the struggle it can be for someone in a precarious financial position. In spite of all this he comments on the improvements to his mental and physical health, and on his appreciation for the average worker. [Learn more].
4. Ecommerce sales falling to pre-covid trendline. While Amazon is still grew by 11% in Q3, we are seeing below-historical-average increase. Amazon isn't alone in this, and online stores like Shopify suffered as well. Amazon also didn't grow as much as expected during the pandemic, but mainly because people often went back to physical stores, where Amazon grew 82% in units sold over the three years. The real question now is, will online sales spike again or continue at its current pace? [Learn more].
5. Amazon's shot at Starlink, Project Kuiper is expanding. Amazon's answer to Elon Musk's Satellite internet service aiming to make internet more widely available, is being expanded with a 172,000 square foot building in Kirkland, Washington. This new facility will create over 200 skilled labor jobs on American soil - a refreshing change of pace. [Learn more].
